Wagin Sheep Dog Arena
By Central Districts Working Sheepdog Club
Thursday 6th August to Sunday 9th August, 2026
The State Arena Championships were held at Wagin, hosted by the Central Working Dog Sheep Dog club.
There was a large entry in all categories as the State representatives had an opportunity for a last shake-down before heading to Queensland to compete in upcoming 2026 Dogpro Supreme Championship.
Many competitors started their road trip on Sunday when the event finished. We wish them all luck.
The sheep were white tag ewes and wethers, which worked well for the dogs, but needed a soft approach to get a good result.
The weather was mostly fine and cold but rained on Friday night and Saturday causing a lake to form around some of the caravans on the campsite and some slippery spots on the arena ground.
On Saturday evening the gala dinner was held at the Palace Hotel. Dinner was served at the table from choices off the menu. The event was well attended by triallers who gave the chefs a round of applause after sweets were served.
Speeches were given by Central President Neil Kristainsen and State President Grant Cooke who thanked the triallers for attending, wishing them well, and acknowledged the state representatives, wishing them success for the up-coming Supreme championship in Queensland.
This weekend we were able to live stream the Open finals via social media. There were 275 viewers on line during the event.
Due to the large entry for the weekend the trial committee chose to reduce the run time to twelve minutes for the Novice and Improver events. Those who penned their sheep did so in an average of ten and a half minutes.
The trial committee also withdrew any novice dog which had not achieved a score in the Novice event, from the Open event, leaving nineteen Novice dogs qualified to compete in the Open.
The biggest battles were at the bridge with the sheep often running down the clock and stealing a good number of points.
The five novice and five Improver finalists used their Open score as the second round score for their final score in their events.
Wayne Hall with Avalon Alley came out on top in the Novice scoring 83 – 86 – 169, taking the win from Peter Gorman with Maxlodge Monty scoring 75 – 81 – 156.
Hayden Harries with Just Coke took the Improver win scoring 81 – 73 – 154 from Terry Martino and Ramulam Tracker who scored 79 – 65 – 144.
The Open champion this year was Neil Kristiansen and Badgingarra Oscar scoring 86 – 82 – 168 from both Grant Cooke with Pendalup Gilbert 79 – 84 – 163 and Allison Burrell with Illoura Jazz scoring 86 – 77 – 163.
Congratulations to all winners and place getters.
Judges for the weekend were Des Davies for Novice, Len Morton for Improver and Simon Leaning for the Open and all finals. Thank you so much for your effort.
