The Mayanup Working Sheepdog club hosted the second arena trial for the year at Ken and Jenny Atherton’s property, near Arthur River.

The weather was cool in the mornings but became warm and humid during the day, making things a little uncomfortable.

The sheep were the winners for most of the trial. Strong fit, fast and unpredictable.

They could go from 0 to 50 km/h in a second, catching dogs and handlers unaware.

The most difficult obstacle was the gap, followed closely by the bridge. If they decided they did not want to go, then nothing could persuade them.

Many people retired or ran out of time at the gap or had a cross when the sheep bolted off.

People who managed the gap found the sheep were better through the race but weren’t interested in going over the bridge. They would look down the bridge, even walk into the mouth, but still refused to go.

When the sheep took it into their heads to run, they did, a long way very fast, peeling off many points as they went.

There were just five pens for the entire trial, four of them by kelpies. Gordon Curtis had two with Binnaburra Marvin and Binnaburra Chloe; Ken Atherton penned with Ramulam Prickles; Nan Lloyd penned with Ramulam Taj; and the sole Border Collie penning was Ivan Solomon with Macs Sal.

In the novice final, none of the five finalists managed a second score, so the result remained the same.

The sheep were well presented and in top condition.

An easter egg hunt on Sunday morning cheered everyone up, as it was tough going out there.

There were 42 entries in novice and eight scores, 46 runs in Improver with 11 scores, and 55 entries in open with 22 scores.

It was an enjoyable trial with a great atmosphere, lots of entertainment from the sheep, and much friendly banter.
