Hypro Beverley Arena 2024

This was the first event for the Perth and Avon Working Sheepdog club, formerly Great Southern Working Sheepdog club.

The event was held at the club’s new ground in Beverley on a property owned by Anna Jennings who also provided the sheep for the weekend.

The weather stayed pleaseant for the week with a little drizzle on Friday and heavy fog on Sunday morning. Once the fog lifted it was game on.

The sheep were three year old ewes who took no prisoners. They were on their home ground and knew where they wanted to go. The dogs needed to get to the head fast to hold the sheep otherwise they would head for the fences at speed. The older more experienced dogs were able to control the sheep, while the younger dogs really struggled. It took a lot of work to convince the sheep to go through the obstacles. Most of the runs ended at the race and very few dogs got to the pen.

Friday night was dinner on the verandah of the house, show-casing some of the local product and Saturday night was dinner at the pub.

The Beverley community provided great support for the event for which we are all very grateful.

The sheep kept the upper hand all weekend. The Novices achieved 4 scores from 37 runs, the Improver had 12 scores from 45 runs and the Open had 22 scores from 79 runs.

Ken Atherton took the Open win with Ramulam Fella on 126 points, second place was Grant Cooke with Grassvalley Palmer on 113 and third was Steve Wallace with Rocky Roxie on 106 points.

Brett Smith with Roseanna Doug won the Improver with 75 points, Nan Lloyd with Binnaburra Ruffy and Simon Leaning with Yarrabee Jack shared second place on 51 points.

Neil Kristiansen with Badgingarra Wilson took first place in the Novice with 48 points, Terry Martino with Marionvale Bo on 43 poinst came second and Gordon Curtis with Binnaburra Marvin came third with 40 points.

Sandra Karasek with Lynthorpe Freckle completed the Encourage event.
